An unusual magazineWhen I was contacted in 2008 by the promoters of the Montreal and Quebec City motorcycle shows with a proposal to produce a new style of magazine that would be original in both form and content, I was most surprised. Not that I was chosen to bring about the project. No! Not to be pretentious, but I knew that it was an assignment that I could fill and that my experience as editor in chief of a variety of motorcycle magazines would stand me in good stead. What really surprised me was the overall approach: «We want a luxurious magazine, a magazine different from all the others on the market. Not a classic program, nor a copy of any existing publication. We're not looking to make money with this product, nor to sell ads. Our goal is to offer readers an informative product, tailored to motorcycling in Canada and to the shows. A promotional tool with both originality and integrity. One which reflects our energy and our unreserved devotion to motorcycling in Quebec. » Personally, I was flattered more than I was surprised. In recent years I'd experienced several professional frustrations which made me doubtful of the future of the Quebec publishing world. I wasn't expecting to receive any such proposition. Having a free hand to lead such an enterprise is something I've been accustomed to all of my career, but to have no restraints from advertising nor targets for newsstand sales is freedom of a different sort. It was the first time I'd received such a vote of confidence, and better still, the means of reaching my goal without cutting corners. Even though the goal of MOTO SHOW is not to substitute for any existing publication, nor to become a normal information source (its frequency prevents that, as also does its mission), it's no less true that the magazine speaks to motorcycle enthusiasts and thereby reflects the passion for the sport that drives us all. When you look at all the obstacles we've faced in recent years (a drop in sales of new bikes, higher registration costs, repressive legal measures in the name of traffic safety, deterioration of the road network, consequences of climate change...), one could be alarmed for the future of our sport. Still, motorcyclists are always resilient in the face of adversity in their own individual ways. Everyone redefines their own approach and adopts countermeasures to still indulge their passion for motorcycling, without constraints. Even the industry has sought to redefine itself in order to face the challenges of the future according to the needs of the marketplace. I hope you enjoy the magazine and that perhaps it will show you some aspects of motorcycling you may not even be aware of. But I wish above all that it inspires you to attend the motorcycle show in Montreal or Quebec City. To survey the new models and, who knows, to come back to motorcycling if you've made a pause or to reaffirm your passion for our sport one way or another. Have a great season!
